Elementary school PTA is permitting AI-generated artwork in the yearbook cover contest
My kiddo is a 1st grader at a local, highly-rated, public elementary school. Every year, the students at his school can submit their artwork for a school-wide yearbook cover contest. The winning artwork (chosen by popular vote) is used for that year's yearbook cover.
This year, while looking through the entries, I noticed 3 that are clearly generated by AI. My son also noticed them, admiring how cool they looked and wanting to vote for them (since obviously, professional-looking AI-generated art is going to look superior to hand drawn art by elementary school students).
I raised this concern about AI-generated art in the cover contest submissions to the yearbook committee, but they waved off my concerns, saying that kids can use any digital tool, including AI, and that the kids can vote for the hand drawn artwork if they want.
I don't have any skin in the game (my kiddo didn't submit an entry, nor did any of his friends), but in my opinion, permitting elementary school kids to submit AI-generated art in, what is essentially, an art contest, blatantly undermines the very values that their education is meant to impart - critical thinking, creativity, hard work, and giving their personal best.
Am I the crazy one here? Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this at the elementary school level? #relationships source
