Taiwan’s legislature has approved the delayed 2026 central-government budget, retaining funding for drones and other asymmetric defence capabilities. 🛡️
The decision follows a prolonged budget impasse that had held up planned defence spending. Taiwan’s government had warned that delays could disrupt equipment acquisition, maintenance, and replenishment of fuel and ammunition.
Drones are central to Taiwan’s asymmetric-defence approach because they can support surveillance, targeting, coastal strikes, and maritime operations. The government had proposed NT$210 billion for surveillance drones, coastal-attack drones, and small uncrewed surface vessels through 2031. 🚁
The approved funding gives planners and domestic manufacturers a clearer basis for work, but appropriations alone do not create capability. Procurement, delivery, training, maintenance, and integration into Taiwan’s armed forces still have to follow.
