pGuardian dog barking complaints
We have a few sheep, chickens, and 3 young boys who run around our 8.5ac roperty.
Last year we bought a great pyrenees puppy to help keep off the deer, mountain lions and coyotes. We had an extremely bad coyote problem before getting the dog. Packs coming through and yapping all night and upsetting the Animals. One morning we even caught a coyote stalking our two year old around the corner of the house.
Anyway. We got our dog and she is a great protector. She thinks the boys are her herd and is constantly monitoring them and following them around the property.
We’ve recently had some lions around the property which backs up to a neighborhood full of mostly town folk and our dog has not taken kindly to this and will at time, usually at night, patrol and bark at our fence line. At night if the barking lasts more than a few minutes I’ll go out and lock her up In a big dog run we have because I know the neighbors won’t like the noise.
Today a neighbor approached my wife and they had some words and he voiced his complaints to her so I went and knocked on his door to hear him out. He said he can’t stand the barking and it’s disrupting his “peace”. He also informed me that I shouldn’t let my oldest boy (10) run around because of rattle snakes..and when I mentioned the lions he says we don’t have lions because he’s never seen one (even tho there was one on camera on our lower driveway outside our gate just a few days ago). Says I should have my dog in the kennel all day… this dude is a townie transplant and clearly has little to no experience living in the country or what keeping animals entails. He was keeping his cool but i could tell he was definitely upset. I tried to explain that the dog is for protecting the property from predators and that the barking is limited and i make an effort to keep it under control, my lesson on animals husbandry fell on deaf ears.
I guess my question is. How would you handle this? I don’t want to put a bark collar on my dog because that defeats the purpose as I need her to do her job but I also don’t need this neighbor calling the county on me.
Mind you, the dog barks at things maybe every other day at the most during the day and it’s usually short lived chasing off some deer.
