Is it unusual to have no friends at 32?

I’m turning 32 next month and have no one really to celebrate with and it’s starting to get me down.

I live in the same town I grew up in and over time I’ve made a couple friends, but none of those friendships have lasted. There are two people I hang out with occasionally, but they feel more like situational friendships if that makes any sense. For example, friend one and I will attend running events together and while she is nice enough, there are just some things we don’t see eye to eye on. We don’t ever hang out outside of these events and that’s okay with me. Friend two is someone I worked with previously who understands me well and we get along great. We hang out and go to fun events together sometimes, but I also accept that I am a fair bit older than her and I think she has friends closer to her in her age range that she prefers to do things with, which is totally okay.

I am also autistic and a single parent, so I’m sure part of the problem could be that I am missing social cues or that the free time I have to do things without my kid is very minimal. I also find it difficult to relate to most people.

A couple years ago I ended an unhealthy relationship and really forced myself to go to events and try to make some friends, but I think it came across an inauthentic maybe. People would show up to parties I hosted, but it felt more out of pity or obligation rather than because they sincerely wanted to. I started getting more excuses or reasons for why people couldn’t attend, so I stopped inviting anyone.

I am really struggling to find a genuine connection with anybody these days. And I know I shouldn’t compare myself to others, but I can’t help but notice how some people seem to connect with others instantly. What is the secret that I am missing out on? Can anyone else relate?
