We’re moving into an older home. It was originally building in 1960 but then there’s been additions in all directions and some renovations.
They masked the smell when we can in for visits with fragrant air fresheners. Now that the house is empty, it has a clear musty old smell. Maybe also like the cook a lot too but definitely musty. I found it smelled more on the main floor than on the 2nd floor and in the basement. That could be because I was used to it.
We got mold testing done on the main floor and the basement. The basement came back with elevated mold levels so the company recommended we remediate one are where there was clearly moisture.
But I’m not sure this will take the smell away. There’s carpet on the second floor we will rip out.How lse can I get rid of a smell? Duct cleaning? Please any advice would be helpful. ————————————————————————-

Once the fresheners are gone, a musty 1960 house with additions usually means moisture the renovations never quite sealed, not just old cooking. Main floor being worse makes me think damp air is coming up from a basement or crawl. Did it change room to room, or sit over the whole main level? #home
