Born in jail to her incarcerated mother, teen is now Harvard-bound
Aurora Sky Castner was born in prison, and her father took custody of her as a newborn, raising her as a single parent.
During her elementary school years, Aurora took part in a community mentorship program that paired her with an adult volunteer.
This program aimed to provide guidance and support to young students by addressing their needs, emotions, and future aspirations, meeting once a week during lunch.
It was through this program that Aurora met Mona Hamby, who also didn’t have a mother figure in her life.
“I knew that I couldn't just have lunch with this kid once a week; she needed more,” Mona shared, recalling when Aurora was just 8 years old.
Mona went above and beyond by taking Aurora to a salon for her very first haircut and helping her get glasses.
