I graduated and moved back home this summer and have been running into a problem with making new friends: I sound like a know it all and speak like a textbook.
For context, I didn’t go out much for all of my childhood and most of my interactions were online. The friends I did have were all from robotics club. I went on to attend a tech university where the culture is VERY nerdy. I’ve now moved back home and am trying to reconnect with cousins my age and people in my community (most friends from school were out of state or moved), and I’ve been told that I’m intimidating?? As in I use a lot of academic or technical terms in casual conversation and don’t really know how to turn that part of my brain off.
Most of my home friend group’s majors became our special interests, and we’re big into analysis. So every conversation is the thesis of that or going into the etymology of that and so on. Which is great for speaking to people into academia! But I’m afraid I sound pretentious.
One of my jobs out of school is a customer service position, where many of my peers are much more normal people. I really want to be friends with them! But I feel like 🤓 personified whenever I try to have a conversation. Same thing happens at parties— I try to connect with people my age and at the end find myself just talking politics with people way older than me. Does anyone have tips on how to turn my brain off from “school mode” and not sound like I’m in some seminar? #relationships source
