Bermuda grass should be illegal. They don't call it devil…

Bermuda grass should be illegal.

They don't call it devil grass for no reason. Once it's there, it will never, ever go away. You can remove the top four inches of your soil. You can solarize. You can spray roundup over and over and guess what? If your neighbor has it? It's coming back. It'll shoot right under their driveway and pop up on your side of the fence. If there's a sidewalk in front of your house with rhizomes hiding underneath? It's coming back. You will never, ever win the war.

People in the US are so obsessed with their stupid lawns that they don't care about the impact that these invasive monster plants have. My front yard is a combination native/food/water reclamation garden and I am locked in a never ending battle against 15 foot long bermuda tentacles invading everything because of my neighbor's lush green lawn and the leftover bermuda rhizomes that will forever hide under the sidewalk in front of my house snaking out and showing up in my DG, my veggie beds, my swale... Everywhere. It chokes out my native wildflower bloom in the spring and makes me spray glyphosate in my garden which I'd really rather not do.

I hate it. I hate lawns. But if you have to have a lawn, please choose one that won't colonize every property around you.

Signed, an exhausted gardener.
