Christmas Miracles in Bastogne: General Patton and the Battle of the Bulge 1944

The weather was bitterly cold, with snow falling in thick drifts. Trees were covered in ice, and soldiers huddled in foxholes, trying to stay warm. Fuel and ammunition were prioritized in the supply chain to the front line, and this left the majority of American soldiers without proper clothing for the brutal weather. The cold was so fierce it seeped into their boots, stiffened their fingers, and froze their rifles.
“We were more concerned about frostbite than the Germans,” one GI humorously wrote in a letter home.
