Italians when other Italians exist
The Maritime Republics of Amalfi (blue flag with white cross), Pisa (red flag with white cross), Genoa (white flag with red cross) and Venice (red flag with golden cool lion) were four city-states that, not being able to expand inland, in the XI century gained importance by their position by the sea (Pisa was connected to the sea by the Arno river).
The first one to gain importance was Amalfi. The Amalfi sailors perfected the compass and wrote the first maritime trade code: the Tavole Amalfitane. Amalfi was also the first of these republics to lose importance, and betwen the many causes of the fall of Amalfi we can find an aggression and looting by the Republic of Pisa.
Pisa gained economic growth and power by it's deeds agains the Saracen pirates, done in alliance with Genoa between 1005 and 1015 (as remembered on an headstone on the facade of the cathedral of Pisa); and by piracy (as remembered on an other headstone). For reasons of commercial competition the city went at war against Genoa and was defeated in the naval battle of Melòria in 1284. After that event Pisa had to recognize the supremacy of the rival on the sea.
Genoa gained its importance by participating in the First Crusade (1096-1099), and so obtaining privileges that allowed the city to establish commercial based in Sardinia, Corsica and the Eastern Mediterranean. After defeating Pisa it clashed with Venice, and after loosing the Chioggia War (1378-1381) it lost its power on the sea.
Venice, differently from the other cities, during the VIII century declared its loyalty only to the "Emperor of the Romans" (the Bizantine Empire); and this made it the most advantaged intermediary between the West and the East of the Mediterranean Sea. During the XI century Venice built a fleet to defend itself form the Normans. In addiction to theese factors in 1082 the Bizantine Emperor Alexios I granted to the city the chrysobolla and the assignment of shops, factories and houses in the district of Galata, Bizantium. Venice kept its importance until it was conquerred by Napoleon in 1797.
