i think the first night of a backpacking trip is the weirdest part

you spend weeks thinking about the route, gear, food and weather.

then you finally get out there and the first night feels almost too quiet

every little sound gets your attention. branches moving. animals somewhere in the dark. your sleeping pad making noise every time you move.

by the second or third night, most of it becomes background noise

that transition always gets me

what sound took you the longest to stop noticing while sleeping outside?

That first-night hypervigilance is real. The pad squeak, a branch, something small moving off in the dark, and your brain treats all of it like a status report. Night two the same sounds just mean the woods are doing what woods do.
