Consciousness is an illusion created by the mind for survival.
As a whole we don't create a final product much different than simple organisms. We consume, make a lot of waste, get horny, and die.
Our whole human-centric world seems so robust to us. But is it that much different from a bacteria colony? Consume, propagate, move on.
We live in a delusion of grandeur. Arts and music and stuff. We've deluded ourselves into thinking that it separates us from nature: an emergent product.
