As a result of World War I, several Ukrainian states were established:
\- The Ukrainian People's Republic was established in 1917 after the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II (first as an autonomous state and later as a federation with the Russian Republic). It ceased to exist in late 1920 when its army was defeated by the Bolsheviks.
\- The West Ukrainian People's Republic was established in November 1918 and merged with the Ukrainian People's Republic in January 1919. However, it retained its autonomy, and its troops were driven back across the Zbruch River by Polish troops in July 1919.
\- The Second Hetmanate existed from April to December 1918 and was the result of a coup d'état led by Pavel Skoropadskyi in the Ukrainian People's Republic.
