How do you guys handle mean/ rude children at the playground?
Hi all! There was a child at the playground today who was probably around the age of 6. She initially played nicely with my 3.5 and almost 5 year old girls, but then became very mean to my three year old. She told her she wasn’t allowed to do this or that, stuck her tongue out, and was calling her things such as a “loser” and a “baby”. My almost 5 year old came over to tell me that it made her uncomfortable that the girls parents kept saying bad words to their child (she’s very much a rule follower), so I didn’t want to be too hard on the child because obviously she’s a product of her environment….
So what I did was tell my children that she may be having a bad day and is not ready to make a friend right now. My three year old was offended and put her finger in the child’s face and was calling her a loser and baby back🙃 So I separated them and, again, told my children to make a different friend.
So my question is, do you try to smooth out the problem so the children can continue to play? Or is it crossing a line to speak to someone else’s child in an authoritative manner?
