Standing here, listening to the waves, I remembered…
how many versions of me have stood in places like this,
smiling on the outside while quietly falling apart within.
I remembered the things I never said,
the apologies that never came,
the people I loved who became memories,
and the memories I wished I could forget but couldn't.
The ocean kept moving,
as if it understood something I was still trying to learn that not everything that leaves us
is meant to come back.
Some things wash away slowly.
Some disappear with one powerful wave.
And some stay buried beneath the surface,
unseen by everyone except the person carrying them.
I looked out at the water and wondered
how something so beautiful could hold so much darkness underneath.
Then I realized…
maybe that's what makes us human.
We can carry storms nobody knows about
and still find a way to smile when the sun comes up.
We can miss people who will never walk back through the door.
We can love people who no longer know how to love us.
We can lose pieces of ourselves
and still wake up the next morning searching for a reason to keep going.
The waves came closer, then disappeared again.
And for the first time, I didn't ask where they were going.
I just stood there and listened.
Because maybe life was never about holding onto everything.
Maybe some things are meant to leave our hands,
not because they weren't important,
but because carrying them forever
was slowly drowning us.
So I let the ocean keep what I couldn't carry anymore.

There’s so much truth in what you wrote, the silent battles, the people we still miss, the things we never got to say, and the pieces of ourselves we had to leave behind just to keep going.
Maybe healing really is learning to let the waves take away what our hearts have been too tired to carry. Some memories never truly disappear, but perhaps, with time, they stop hurting quite so deeply.
This felt less like a poem and more like a piece of someone’s soul. And somehow, I felt every word. 🌊

Stopping on the ocean kept moving is the line that stays. Every version of you that smiled through the crack still counted on that sand, and the apologies that never came do not shrink just because the tide does. People turning into memories is heavy company for a shore that looks this calm. That blue 3 over the sunset reads like a middle chapter. What did the earlier shorelines sound like?

Maybe the earlier shorelines were louder than this one. Some carried laughter, some carried loss, and some carried things I didn't have words for yet. I think every shoreline I've stood on left something behind in me. Maybe that's why this one feels so quiet I've already survived the noise that came before it.
