Awkward situation with my mum and childcare, wwyd?
I have a nearly two year old daughter and work 3 days a week. Two of these days my daughter goes to nursery and on a Friday, her nana (partners mum) and granny (my mum) alternate.
My daughter LOVES going to her nana’s house Unfortunately on the days with granny, who comes to our house to look after her, my daughter is crying and screaming as soon as she realises what the plan is (which will be hours before I leave for work) and then when granny arrives there’s a horrible transition of her being upset and my partner trying to detach himself from her to go and work upstairs. She does calm down eventually and potter about.
It’s been 9 months of this now and she’s not getting any better. My mum is a lovely lovely lady, but she just kind of sits and watches her play rather than doing anything interactive with her, and they sit in at home all day and don’t go anywhere. All of this would be fine if she was doing us a favour but actually we rearranged our childcare plans at the last minute to give my mum the chance to do this, after she specifically said she was keen to be able to be involved.
So this arrangement is all for the benefit of my mum, and my daughter just kind has to endure it for the sake of my mum having this experience.
I know it’s good for them to have a relationship but I could facilitate this on my non workdays as well. On the other hand I know my mum wishes she had been able to help care for my older daughter when she was little and now this is her chance.
Do we just keep ploughing on in the hope that my daughter becomes happier with her?! I’m writing this after leaving her absolutely distraught this morning screaming ‘no granny!’ 😩 #relationships source
