The US Government, Hip Hop, and Diddy
I have been reading about COINTELPRO and the history of U.S. intelligence targeting leftist, socialist, communist, and Black liberation movements. The FBI openly worked to infiltrate and destroy these movements in the 60s. They helped take out figures like MLK, Malcolm X, and Fred Hampton. It showed how far the government would go to stop anything that leaned toward communist organizing or radical racial unity.
After COINTELPRO, intelligence agencies began monitoring hip hop as the community grew larger. The FBI kept files on artists, tracked concerts, questioned labels, and used informants in the environments around artists. Tupac Shakur’s family was tied to some of the most politically threatening figures in the eyes of the U.S. government. His mother, aunt, and godfather were major names in the Black Panther Party. His aunt even fled to Cuba after the party broke her out of prison. Tupac was raised in that environment, taught communist and Panther politics from childhood, and was starting political projects of his own.
My theory is Diddy, was used as an intelligence informant to help redirect hip hop away from radical politics and in return he got to take out the people who most threatened his rise to stardom/ ability to play God. Thoughts?
