Ryan Johnson didn't ruin the Star wars Sequel trilogy ; JJ Abrams did
The Force Awaken is only a good movie because A NEW HOPE is a good movie. It is a movie devoid of anything to say. It's the best rated movie of the sequel, but in retrospect, it is technically what everyone on the internet is in today's culture revolting against ; It is a by the book, safe, pristine, apple-like in it's design story. It is a rehash of what works, a commercial bait, made to lure us with calls to nostalgia. I think with the developed vocabulary of today's audience, and it's keen ability to discern the pointlessness of today's popular culture, the movie would have been far worse received today, as audiences are now more trained to realize just how empty our popular culture has become.
The last jedi unfortunately had to start telling an actual story from the midway point, which was an extremely tall order. It's theme of futility, of "Un-Chosen one"/Existential mundanity, are an amazing theme to explore 2 after two trilogies of the whole fucking universe revolving around a small set of characters because of prophecies and midichlorians. The movie stumbles here and there, and is unfortunately caught up in a weird part of internet culture, the early days of the rage against "woke-ism", which at that point could still masquerade itself as "love for the source material", and doesn't get the chance it deserves, but is in retrospect a pretty good movie. It is a movie about characters first and foremost. And it does pretty good stuff with them. But, you know, lady with purple hair.
JJ abrams comes back later, and once again, throws any risky, worthwhile storytelling for safety. We're back to destined bloodlines, we're back to Palpatine, we're back to somehow finding a way of bringing back all the old guard through the final Rey attack. Again with the safe, but ultimately devoid of anything. Rise of skywalker again sandwiches The last jedi, and makes it look worse by it's simple act of existing.
