Hi, apologies for the long post! I’m a (29)single mom from South Florida planning a trip to Utah with my son(almost 6) in early November, and I could use some advice from people who actually know the area. 😊 I’ve never really traveled, especially by myself with my son. The only “solo trip” I’ve ever taken was to Ocala, FL 😂 so flying across the country and exploring Utah with a 5year old is definitely outside my comfort zone. But I really want to start experiencing more of the world with him while he’s growing up. We’re from VERY flat FL, so I want to take him somewhere completely different and let him see mountains, canyons, and hopefully some snow! I’m thinking of going for about a week and spending time around Zion and Bryce Canyon. I have a general idea of what I’d like to do, but I’m trying not to over-plan since I’ll have a 5-year-old with me. He’s athletic, loves being outside and loves nature, but obviously I don’t want to exhaust him with long hikes. I do have some hiking experience here in FL, so I’m used to bringing plenty of water, taking breaks and paying attention to when my son needs to rest. What I DON’T have experience with is elevation, mountains, cold weather, snow or icy trails, so that’s where I’m a little out of my element. 😅 I’d especially love recommendations for short/easy hikes with amazing views that a 5-year-old can realistically handle, things around Zion/Bryce that kids tend to love besides hiking, where you’d stay if you were doing both parks, and what driving is like in early November. I’d also love advice on what clothes/gear we actually need. I was thinking about ordering hiking shoes online or going to Bass Pro, but I’m not sure what we really need for that time of year or whether we should have something for traction if there’s snow or ice. I’d REALLY love for him to see snow at Bryce, even if it’s only a little. Neither of us is accustomed to elevation or cold weather, so any advice about that would be appreciated too. And please tell me anything a Floridian might not even think to prepare for. 😂 Also, any flying-with-a-kid advice is welcome! He’s never been on a plane and I’m actually terrified of flying myself. 😅 The last time I flew was years ago and I had a horrible earache that lasted basically my entire trip, so if anyone has tips for preventing that for both of us, PLEASE share them. Basically, pretend you’re giving advice to a Florida mom who knows her way around a trail but has absolutely no idea what she’s doing once you add mountains, elevation, snow and an airplane. I’m excited but definitely nervous! Thank you!! 🤍 #activity #hiking source
