I'm waiting impatiently for my baby to say his first words, he's 1 year and 2 weeks. Most of our friends with similarly aged kids seem to say a few words, as well as use pointing as a gesture. They look and sound sooooo sophisticated and grown to me.
My kid does not repeat any sounds, he just babbles "babababa", "dadada", "mamamama" and rolls french Rs all day long. HOWEVER, in the last 2 weeks he's taken a big step forward with using baby signs.
He's been using the sign "more" since around 8 months. Three weeks back he started signing "lamp" and "all done". In the last two weeks he's added: water, shoes, poop, head, push (on swing) and on a few occasions he's tried to copy both book and ball. He even regularly combines the sign for "more" with another sign like "more water" or "more push".
Now to my question: it seems unusual to me that he has a vocabulary of 10 signs and makes 2 word sentences, but does not even say mama or hi? (Yes, he babbles mamamamama, but he doesn't use it functionally)
If you have used baby signs with your child, how long were they signing, and how many signs did they learn, before they understood to start copying verbal words? #relationships source
