ATP 1000 Montréal Doubles F: Luz/Matos def. Arévalo/Pavić…

ATP 1000 Montréal Doubles F: Luz/Matos def. Arévalo/Pavić 5-7, 6-4,

Hoping this little thread can help boost some interest in these brilliant guys 💪

It was a very up-and-down first set highlighted by its crucial double faults. At 3-all, Pavic was serving and gave up that game with a double fault at 30-40. The next game, at 4-3 up, Matos was serving and gave up that game for it to immediately go back on serve with a double fault of his own at deuce. Matos was serving at 5-6 as well and conceded that game, although it wasn't a foregone conclusion. He went down 15-40 but Pavic and Arevalo both made errant returns, but at deuce, Arevalo returned in stunning fashion and then hit a great FHDTL past Matos from a difficult position on the ad side. Just a very dicey and edgy set overall.

Second set was less dramatic. Other than the drama in the first service game, the Brazilians snuffed out any theatrics and served very well to close it out (82% first serve points won, 92% second serve points won). Arevalo was serving to start the set and Pavic kind of blew it for them as they immediately went down 0-30 (on one of the points, he left a ball that he thought was going to out but it stayed in), and then at deuce, a miscommunication saw both Pavic and Arevalo cover the left side of the court so Luz hit an easy winner into the open court and there was the break.

Match tiebreak:

First point, Arevalo serving and Pavic moved way too early amid a long CC rally between Arevalo and Matos, and there's the minibreak. Poor decision-making has been the common thread between much of his game play today. Poor returns from both the third seeds and it goes to 3-0 for the Brazilians in a flash. Arevalo is way too close to the net and misses a volley that he probably should've still gotten and 4-1. Two more poor returns and now it's 6-1. Ugh, there are barely any rallies in this TB! And then FINALLY a good-ass rally in this TB but it goes to 7-2 after a crazy exchange, where Arevalo/Pavic were both hanging on at the net with Luz/Matos just blasting, but then Pavic snatched at a volley and the ball is dumped into the net. Arevalo/Pavic finally get it back to 7-4 on Matos's serves as Arevalo hits a great FH and then Luz couldn't put the ball away the next point. But then it's 8-4 as Pavic makes another terrible volley at the net oh my goodness. Luz is reading that Pavic serve like a book! 8-5 after Pavic gives a good serve and hits a competent overhead. Then 8-6 when Luz goes for way too much on his forehand. Luz serves again and it's 9-6 because Pavic is just so damn stubborn on return and strikes it late so it's basically a shank. Luz then hits a SCREAMING FH winner down the line on Arevalo's serve and there's the match!

I gave Luz and Matos a very solid chance of winning their first Masters title and thus, it manifested. Luz was the MVP today, and he and Matos deserved that win today. So dynamic, so much vigor in their game. They are absolutely ones to watch in New York! What a performance, what a team!
