Wife Interviewing At Luxury Jewelry Store-venting!
My wife has been working at a high-ish end retail store for over 10 years and has basically hit a wall. Over the last 2 years, she has taken initiative to go above her job duties and improve sales and shipping numbers. every 2-3 years a new manager comes in and overall employee turnover is very high. she’s the 2nd longest employee at this store.
She applied for 2 internal supervisor and management roles and was turned down. New manager told her she doesn’t have leadership or problem solving skills. Then he hired 2 new 20 something’s in or just out of college. Little to no experience. NOTE, manager is male, mid 40s, all other employees are female. My wife is 40.
She finally decided to start applying for other jobs. she wants more hours, better pay of course, and a more respectful atmosphere.
She applied to a few jobs, some she didn’t hear back from, she interviewed and applied at a department store and received an offer but didn’t accept. It was only 1 dollar more an hour and much worse hours and environment.
We saw a listing for a luxury jewelry store, family owned in the same shopping center her current store is in. She was contacted for an interview.
Over the last 6 weeks, she has had 2 remote interviews, one with the director, one with a manager. Then in person, met a buyer who is married to the family, then in person met with the owners daughter and husband who are heavily involved. I’m unsure of their titles. Then, finally this past week she went into the store to meet the founders who live in Florida over facetime with the store director from the first interview.
Prior the the meeting with the owners, they also had her take a Caliper assessment, which took her a little over 3 hours to complete.
From what she has told me, every interview went very well. They understand her skills and lack of specific fine, high end jewelry experience but basically told her she could learn. The original job she applied for, they told her they actually wanted to create a new role for her to use her skills, back of house, inventory, shipping and some customer facing sales, assistance, experience, etc. The owners actually know a distant relative of mine and asked her about him. They talked about her history, our shared religion, etc. Everything was so hopeful and promising. She also sent nice thank you emails after every interview and they responded to almost all of them, thanking her back.
I am from her but my wife is from a different country and English isn’t her first language and she isn’t used to the job market here.
The facetime with the founders was this past wednesday and she was told they would call her within 2 days. She hadn’t heard back yesterday so called just to check in at my suggestion (maybe a mistake) A worker answered and said her contact, the director was with a client but that she would call her back. She called in around 2:30PM yesterday and still hasn’t heard a thing.
at this point she is spiraling because she thinks either they are going to drag this out longer, it’s going to be a no, or they are just going to ghost her. Originally, she was told the interview process was 2-3 weeks, it’s now been over 6 weeks.
