🏀 The NBA has fined the Los Angeles Clippers $30 million and ordered the team to forfeit five first-round draft picks after finding salary-cap circumvention violations involving Kawhi Leonard.
The league said the Clippers will lose one first-round selection in each draft from 2029 through 2033. Owner Steve Ballmer was suspended from league and team activities for one year; executives Gillian Zucker and Lawrence Frank also received suspensions.
The NBA said its investigation found that the organization facilitated off-court income opportunities and endorsement agreements between Leonard and companies doing business with the team, among other violations. Leonard was ordered to pay the league $700,000.
The punishment limits the Clippers’ future ability to add young players through the draft or use first-round picks in trades. The club will also be monitored by the league for five years. ⚖️
The investigation had already put a proposed trade sending Leonard to the Toronto Raptors on hold. The NBA and National Basketball Players Association said the announced penalties are final and binding, while the league said it may consider further action if new information emerges.
