I think people have gotten way too comfortable treating “classy” as the default standard for how people (especially women) should present themselves. I hear it all the time: “You should wear this instead, it looks classier,” or “That would look so much more classy.” But why is *classy* automatically the goal? There’s a weird assumption underneath a lot of this advice that if something isn’t classy, elegant, modest, or refined, then it must be trashy, tacky, or inappropriate. Someone can dress revealingly, loudly, provocatively, casually, or just in a way that doesn’t fit a traditional idea of “class” without looking trashy. They may simply have a different aesthetic. I’m not arguing that everyone should dress as raunchy or revealing as possible either. I just think “classy” has become one of those words people use to make their personal taste sound like an objective standard and, pretty often, as a passive-aggressive way to criticize women who aren’t particularly interested in looking refined or conservative. Not everyone is trying to look classy. And that doesn’t mean they look trashy. #conversation
