How am is supposed to make a voluntary or spontaneous prayer?

I came from a Catholic background, and I need some guidance from my brothers and sisters in Allah.

I'm making my Salah very good, I think. But I need some help because I'm not sure how to pray for my health, just to thank, ask for help or just to have a closer relationship with Allah.

Does it exist here? like a voluntary prayer?
