Survival related questions as a beginner Where do most people even start? I started watching the show called alone on Netflix and it blows my mind how much knowledge all of these people have. They know everything from primitive houses, tools, fires, animals, plants and berries, trees, even mushrooms. I know there are books and forums, but where do survivalist get started learning everything to do with survival not just the basics. Do people just study the area they are going to so they know what to expect? This might be a common question and I apologize if it is but I am genuinely curious on how people go from knowing nothing to being able to tell what every single plant is and if it’s edible even mushrooms which are way less safe.

you can work both the armchair and the practical ends to this question. so many good books and now internet resources. but experience in being self reliant provides confidence.

fun exercise would be to list the things or conditions that would be most distressing or challenging. from the simple: water, fire, shelter, orientation, wilderness first aid for a 24-72 hr emergency, to the more complex of being stuck somewhere (voluntary or not) for weeks or months.

I guess it'd good to start from something basic like the Scout's handbook or The American Boy’s Handy Book
