YSK…Beware when a rental car company switches you to a Tesla
Why YSK…I found out the hard way that expecting even the most basic security from a Tesla is a mistake. Worse, at least one rental car company’s staff is well aware of this even as the sales agents push Teslas as an upgrade.
I travel a LOT and regardless of the US town or city, you do not leave anything of value in a car. Especially a rented one. Until now, you could count on locking something in the trunk; at least in the short term. Not with a Tesla.
I’m still not sure exactly how the thief pulled it off, but he/she/they was able to unlock the car interior, the “frunk” and the rear trunk with zero damage or evidence left behind. A quick google search pulls up at least a half dozen videos of “How to unlock a Tesla w/o a key” if you’re curious. I wish I knew ahead of time….
What’s most aggravating is the rental car company—let’s call them “.99cent + .01 Rental Car”—has staff that are well aware of the car’s vulnerabilities even as they push the cars at check out. (I had reserved another make.) So do yourself a favor and skip the Elon-mobile if you want to hold on to your luggage, or plan on carrying it with you wherever you go.
