My son punched a bully

This morning before school my 6yo son was complaining of a bully who is a couple years older and has been pushing him and a bunch of kids in his class around. He didn’t want to go to school but dealing with unsavory people is a part of life so we gave him some ideas for how to diffuse or avoid the bully and sent him on his way.

A few hours later we got a call from my sons deaf/hoh teacher (my son is mostly deaf and wears hearing aids) saying that the bully was pushing/bullying a girl my son is friends with so my son punched him in the face and gave him a bloody nose.

I am honestly proud that he stood up to the bully and for his friend. I want to use it as an opportunity to teach him but I don’t want to reward him for punching another kid despite the fact that I’m somewhat happy he didn’t take anymore crap. Any advise?

Update:
Thanks everyone for the perspective and advice. We had a good conversation about expectations and actions in these situations in the future. We ordered pizza and had some ice cream as a reward for standing up for his friend. I told him that we understand that he didn’t feel like he had any other options and that defensive hitting should always be a last resort. We are discussing putting both our kids in jujitsu as that seems like a good idea. Thanks again for all the input!
