Rose is a young woman working on Master Vallin’s farm. Overcome by the stifling spring heat, she rests on a bale of straw, where she meets Jacques, a farmhand, and begins a relationship with him. Jacques promises to marry her. Rose soon becomes pregnant but breaks his promise,.

Years pass peacefully but the master is desperate for a child; unfortunately, the couple does not succeed.
