Rose is a young woman working on Master Vallin’s farm. Overcome by the stifling spring heat, she rests on a bale of straw, where she meets Jacques, a farmhand, and begins a relationship with him. Jacques promises to marry her. Rose soon becomes pregnant but breaks his promise,.

Years pass peacefully but the master is desperate for a child; unfortunately, the couple does not succeed. One evening, Master Vallin’s sadness turns to anger and violence, prompting Rose to confess she has a six-year-old son. Vallin receives the news with relief, deciding to adopt the boy since they are unable to have a child of their own.
