Eltz Castle (12th Century AD), situated in Wierschem, Germany, it has remained under the ownership and occupation of the same family for 33 generations.
This iconic castle, often referred to as "Burg Eltz" in German, is a prime example of the romantic architecture that characterizes the Middle Ages. It is perched on a hilltop overlooking the Elzbach River and surrounded by lush forests. Eltz Castle consists of multiple buildings, towers, and courtyards, each constructed in different periods and styles over the centuries.
In mid-19th Century, Count Karl zu Eltz initiated a restoration project for the castle, from 1845-1888. The restoration efforts aimed to carefully preserve the existing architectural elements. Subsequent extensive security and restoration work occurred between 2009-2012, addressing various structural and functional issues. Today, Rübenach and Rodendorf family wings are open to the public. Visitors can explore exhibits, including the treasury with valuable artifacts and the armory showcasing historic weapons and armor.
Eltz Castle is not only a historic gem but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its cultural significance and its role in preserving the medieval heritage of Germany.
