✍️ Is Cursive Writing Still Relevant?
a. Do you still use cursive writing in your daily life? If so, when?
Yes. I have put pen to paper all my life; nowadays, for quick/rough notes. My use of technology (typewriter and keyboard) facilitates manual processes.
The ability to write cursively also enables one to read historical documents; shockingly, too many young people cannot “decipher” quill on vellum, typeset in old books and pamphlets and engraved script on copper- and steel-plates.
b. Do you think schools should continue teaching cursive writing or should they focus more on digital skills? Why?
The handwriting and spelling errors of some 30-somethings are akin to a seven-year-old! It belies a lack of schooling – call it penmanship and literacy. Certainly, teach digital skills, too… they are necessary in this fast-paced world but do not jettison foundational skills which last a lifetime.
c. Has technology changed the way you write and communicate?
I spend more time using a keyboard (email, social media) and my phone (texting, email, social media). When prose is needed, I use MS Word instead of pen and paper.
Technology is a facilitator and not a substitute for the ability to write and communicate well. YouTube has a video of King Charles III touring Apple’s London HQ where an intern explained how AI can “polish” the content of a job application and covering letter/email to help secure an interview. On meeting in person, if poor communication skills are evident, everyone’s time will have been wasted.
