In 1893, at an excavation near the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece, archaeologists discovered an amazingly preserved, standing statue of Antinous, the lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. When Antinous died mysteriously, Hadrian erected statues of him everywhere and declared him a god to be worshipped. However, zealous Christians planned to destroy the temple in an attempt to wipe out the last traces of Paganism, so this incredible statue was moved and buried out of harm's way, where it stayed for 1,700 years.
