Your Angry Reactions to the Narcissist

Narcissists can struggle with anger. Ongoing exposure to the narcissist will create anger-issues for yourself. Psychotherapist Dr. Les Carter explains how setting relationship boundaries helps avoid that path.

What does anger do to you?

Anger may feel justified at times. It can seem righteous, reasonable, or even motivating. But no matter the reason, anger is always destructive. It is the ugliest of emotions because it strips away not just our peace but also the dignity and love we offer to others. Unlike other emotions that can serve a purpose and pass, anger lingers. It wants to stay, to poison, and to take from you more than it ever gives. It clouds judgment, erodes relationships, and robs you of the very beauty and radiance that make you your True Self.

When anger grips us, it distorts who we are. If you’ve ever looked in the mirror while enraged, you’ve seen the truth—your face twisted, your body tense, your heart hardened. That reflection is not the real you. It is a distorted shadow, an imposter fueled by catabolic energy that weakens rather than empowers. This is why awareness is so important. By learning to pause, reflect, and recognize what anger is doing in real time, you create the space to choose influence over reaction.

Your True Self is not angry. Your True Self is grounded in compassion, empathy, gratitude, forgiveness, and healthy boundaries. These anabolic energies elevate you and others, while anger drags everyone down. The challenge is not to eliminate the emotion—anger is a signal, a teacher—but to master your response. You always have the choice: to let it consume you or to rise above it.

Do not allow anger to steal your beauty or your peace. Practice presence. Breathe. Step back before words are spoken or actions are taken that you cannot undo. Each time you resist anger’s grip, you reclaim your clarity, your relationships, and your power to influence life with strength and grace.

Why You Should Let go of Anger after Narcissistic Abuse?

The intensity of anger after Narcissistic Abuse generates thoughts of revenge; yet, the best revenge is to let go and move on with your life.

The key to letting go is accepting the anger as a valid and healthy response to what you experienced in the relationship. Suppressing it or allowing it to build up inside will only consume you further.
