What’s the real difference between life and death?

Several years ago, I found myself in the darkest stretch of my life. A broken back ended a 22-year career. The physical pain dragged me down, but the mental and emotional pain nearly ended me. I felt useless—like a discarded piece of something no longer needed. No one made me feel that way. I did that to myself. I was buried in the weight of my own limiting beliefs, unable to see beyond the misery.

I numbed myself with alcohol and prescription drugs, lost in a fog that stole two full years—not just from me, but from my wife and kids. I was there, but I wasn’t living. I just wanted it all to stop. I wanted to die. I just wanted the pain to go away.

But even in that fog, small flickers of light found their way in—reminders that I was still here for a reason. And if I was still breathing, there had to be a purpose left in me. Slowly, painfully, I began to tear down the beliefs that told me I was done. And I built something new.

Today is my birthday and I’m 55. I’m still alive. And because I’m alive, my purpose continues. I’ve redefined my relationship with pain. Now I see it as a signal—not of defeat, but of purpose. A call to serve, to help others rise.

If you’re hurting, don’t just wish the pain away. Use it. Let it remind you: you’re still here, and that means you still have something to give.

You matter. You’re not done. So live.

If this reached you or there was something that truly resonated with you, please like and share in hopes this will maybe reach someone that it could help.
