Electricity tracker idea I looked at my electricity bill…

Electricity tracker idea

I looked at my electricity bill last month and realised I had absolutely no idea where the money was going. So I started digging.

Like most people in India, I just paid the bill every month without questioning it. ₹2,800 this month. ₹3,100 next month. Okay fine, whatever.

But then I started wondering, is it the AC? The fridge that's been running for 6 years? The geyser my dad refuses to replace? I had zero way of knowing.

I did some research and found out that in other countries this is already a solved problem. Smart plugs, real-time dashboards, AI telling you "hey run your washing machine at noon not 8pm and save X amount." All of it exists. Just... not really here.

So I've been quietly working on something. Nothing built yet just research, architecture docs, a lot of late nights. Calling it SmartWatt for now.

The basic idea:

\- Cheap smart plug (thinking ₹799) on each appliance → tracks watts in real time

\- App shows you "your AC cost you ₹38 today" not just a scary number at end of month

\- AI that actually tells you when to run stuff based on your usage patterns

\- For people with solar shows generation vs what you're actually consuming, battery left, how much you've sent back to the grid

\- B2B side white label it for solar installation companies so their customers get it bundled in automatically

The part I keep thinking about is the solar angle. India has 10M+ rooftop solar installs now and most of those people are flying blind. Their inverter app shows total generation. That's it. They have no idea if they're actually optimising anything.

Anyway. I'm at the stage where I need people to tell me what's wrong with this before I go further.

Few things I'm genuinely unsure about:

\- Is ₹99/month too much to ask if the app is clearly saving someone ₹600-1000/month? I keep going back and forth on this

\- Planning to start with white-labelled hardware (Tuya-based plugs) rather than designing from scratch. Smart shortcut or corner-cutting that'll bite me later?

\- The go-to-market I like most is partnering with solar installers directly. they give SmartWatt to every customer they install for. Anyone have experience with B2B hardware bundling like this?

\- Am I missing a competitor? I've found some DISCOM apps and basic inverter dashboards but nothing that ties it all together in one place

Not trying to sell anything here. Just a person with a problem, a potential solution, and too much self-doubt. Would love the harsh version of what you think. 🙏
