“If the Ukraine puppet is left unchecked, the Seoul military will follow suit”: Kim Jong-un justifies military action against Ukraine as a “deterrence” against South Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has asserted the legitimacy of deploying troops to support Russia. On the 10th, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) published the full text of Kim’s speech delivered the previous day during his visit to the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang in celebration of Russia’s Victory Day. Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Workers’ Party, also covered Kim’s visit on its front and second pages.
In his speech, Kim referred to the Russia–Ukraine war, stating, “I swiftly shared with Comrade President Vladimir Putin my determination to faithfully fulfill our treaty obligations and issued orders to annihilate the neo-Nazi occupiers in Ukraine and liberate the Kursk region.” The treaty he referenced is the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement” signed between North Korea and Russia in June of last year.
Kim criticized those condemning North Korea’s military involvement, saying, “Those who slander our participation must be considered. Had they not committed the atrocious crime of invading Russian territory, they would not have fallen victim to our swords and spears.”
He further warned, “If Ukraine’s puppet regime is allowed to escalate its military actions against the territory of a nuclear power, they will only grow bolder in their recklessness. In that case, the military of Seoul—America’s top stooge—might also be emboldened to emulate their foolhardy bravery.” Kim insisted, “We have a duty to responsibly correct such wrongful and dangerous developments.”
In his speech, Kim referred to President Putin as “my dearest friend and comrade,” emphasizing the strong bond between the two leaders.
Both KCNA and Rodong Sinmun noted that Kim’s daughter, Ju-ae, accompanied him on the visit to the Russian Embassy, referring to her as “the respected daughter.” In a separate statement by Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui released the previous day, Ju-ae was described for the first time as “the most beloved daughter.”
The Central Committee of the Workers’ Party, the State Affairs Commission, the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly, and the Cabinet also jointly sent a congratulatory message to the Russian side. The message read: “May 9th is a shared holiday for the peoples of Korea and Russia,” adding, “By the side of a fighting, victorious Russia will always stand the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”
