Cracked open 3 Sons' Triple Barrel Vanilla Big Sxxxy — their English-style barleywine, aged across three barrels with vanilla beans. \[ABV\]%.
Pours pitch black, basically no head, barely any carbonation — looks more like an imperial stout than a barleywine in the glass.
Nose is straight dessert: toffee, brown sugar, dark caramel, a big wave of vanilla with warm oak sitting underneath.
Taste follows — thick and syrupy, liquid caramel and crème brûlée up front, dark fruit through the middle, then the barrels land with a boozy oak-and-vanilla finish. Full-bodied, coats the glass, almost no carb to cut it.
Not subtle, and it isn't trying to be. Sipping this slow. One of the better vanilla barleywines I've had.
