ELI5: Why has Advertising for the Christmas Season pushed back earlier in the past two decades?

I am 30 and I remember how, growing up, the Christmas Commercial Season, with all of its advertising and paraphernalia, always began either right after Thanksgiving or on December 1st. The first time I remember Christmas coming early, so to speak, was in 2009, when I started seeing Christmas decorations and music at stores in early November, right after Halloween. In the years since then, I have even seen some Christmas advertising coming in late October, before Halloween has even passed.

Is there any particular reason why the Christmas Season has been pushing back in the time that it has? I get that there is increased desire/need to sell, but why and how now, or in the recent past? I do find it curious that the Lehman Brothers Crash happened in late 2008, which was when the Great Recession got bad in the United States, which coincides when I remember the Christmas commercial season pushing back earlier. There may also be a cultural dimension to this regarding norms, as in, with the Christmas season starting earlier, people are more willing to get on board with decorating in early November.
