Just moved to the U.S. from Europe — Is this the main HVAC filter or is there one inside the furnace?

Hey everyone,

I just moved to the U.S. this year from Europe and I’m still figuring out how some things work here — especially HVAC systems.

We have a central HVAC system that blows both hot and cold air throughout the house. I read that the air filter should be changed about every 3 months, so I’m trying to locate it.

The furnace/air handler is inside a cupboard, and there’s a vented panel visible on the outside of that cupboard with a filter. I’m not sure if that vent is where the main filter is located, or if there’s a separate filter inside the furnace unit itself.

Is the filter usually behind that return vent, or inside the furnace? I’d really appreciate any guidance — this is all new to me!

Thanks in advance!
