Dirty data is any information that is inaccurate, incomplete, inconsistent, duplicated, or outdated within a business system. It’s seemingly small, common occurrences within organizations, like:
* The customer record is missing a phone number. * The product entry exists twice under slightly different names. * The sales figure doesn't match the finance report for the same period.
This matters because it's waste - not just in making wrong decisions or hurting AI initiatives that might be built on bad data, but also the hidden friction when teams spend 5 minutes finding a spreadsheet ... or when a customer gets annoyed because the automated chatbot has something wrong ... or a dashboard the C-suite uses isn't fully trusted, so teams have to grab additional context manually.
It adds up for orgs of all sizes. Larger businesses are hurt more, of course.
