Hey there. So I’m moving to northern Norway in October and I’d like to get back into camping. When I lived in the PNW I did quite a few camping trips, but due to work I haven’t had the time for it the last ten years or so. Seems like hot tents became super popular and I don’t know if that’s right for me. Since I’ll be working I usually have 2-3 days for short trips from outside Tromsø. I guess I will spend some time backcountry skiing as well, so probably not camping every weekend. But I also have bc xc ski and I like the idea of driving out of town, putting on the skis and ski for a few miles to set up camp for a night, maybe continue skiing the next day and setting up camp elsewhere or going back to the car. Depending on where to go from Tromsø the surrounding could be mellow forests or rather alpine areas. For the second I’d need a strong tent to withstand heavy winds and snow. For forest trips I could probably get away with a tipi style tent.
What do you think is the right way to get back into camping? Buying a cheap OneTigris tipi hot tent and a titanium stove and only do trips in sheltered areas or get a more capable 4s tent and just stick to making campfires outside the tent? I like the idea of the cozy feeling. And such tent and stove would be around €500 which is not bad. I do have good winter sleeping mats (inflatable r7 and foldable r4) as well as winter sleeping bag and I know that the stove wouldn’t keep me warm all night. I really like Hilleberg tents, but I’m 6‘2 and with thick mats I feel like most of their tents would be too short on the inside (except for eg Keron). #camping #activity
