ELI5: Creation of dirt/soil
I’ve just been planting in my garden and realized that I have no idea how the packaged dirt/soil is made and only a vague idea of how it happens naturally.
I know that compost and worms contribute but I guess I’m thinking mostly about large scale soil for purchase. How do they make it? How do they know what’s in it? Why do some plants prefer a specific type?
