She told me in high school that she thought I’d make a good writer someday. I carried those words with me. Yesterday, she was there as I launched my fourth book.

This is Mrs. Afouda.

Over a decade ago, when I was in high school, she read an essay I had written and told me that I would make a good writer someday. But she didn’t just say it. She nurtured that possibility in me, encouraged me, and made me believe that perhaps there was something worth pursuing in my words.

When I published my first book, I reached out to her, and she has continued to follow my journey ever since. My third book is actually dedicated to her and to the other English teachers who taught me in high school.
And yesterday , for my fourth book, she was there.

There’s something deeply moving about having someone who saw the writer in you before you fully saw yourself as one, standing beside you years later as you launch your fourth book.

Thank you, Mrs. Afouda, for seeing it early, for nurturing it, and for continuing to show up. I carry your encouragement with me.
