Hey, not sure if this is the right place to ask. But im starting a DIY project which will require some stamped sheet metal parts. They're not extremely complex or large, and having them custom made or purchasing a stamping machine and dies is not in my budget.
I was thinking could I carve a negative impression of the shape I want, then hammer or press the sheet metal (which is a thin, flexible aluminium) into it to impress the details, before then bending it around a block of wood to assume the tubular shape. Turns out this is a thing, but I can't find much in the way of general best practice or tips and tricks.
So, Do I need to create a slightly smaller positive impression to press down into the metal layed over the negative carving. Or can i just hammer away using other pieces of wood, rubber, etc, until the metal has sunk into the carving?
Or is there a better way of going about this, or any tips for trying to undertake this.
