Solo winter hiking Hesten & Segla - in Senja, Norway!š³š“
I travelled to Fjordgard in Senja, Norway and spent the night camping near the Hesten trailhead in my Hilleberg Akto, preparing for a solo winter ascent the following morning.
Conditions were beautiful ā but serious. Avalanche risk was rated Level 3 (Considerable) on Varsom for the region, and so there was potential for naturally triggered slides. Although they are very rare on these mountains.
At first light, I began the climb up Hesten. The snow-covered landscape was incredible, but the higher I climbed the steeper and more exposed the terrain became. I was almost rock climbing at the highest point, and didn't have the right kit to finish the climb so I made the decision to turn back before the summit.
Disappointing ā but the right call.
Rather than call it a day, I headed over to the Segla trail and started again. The conditions here were far more favourable, the snow was stable, and the climb felt strong. In full winter conditions, I was able to summit Segla ā and the views over the fjords were unreal.
