YSK: Type 1 diabetes isn't just a childhood disease
Why YSK: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) can be diagnosed at any age, including in adulthood. This is important for adults to know because they may dismiss signs of T1D or assume that only children can develop it.
You may have heard it called “juvenile diabetes,” but that term is outdated and can contribute to the misconception that T1D only affects children.
Some possible warning signs of T1D include:
* Frequent urination
* Being unusually thirsty
* Increased hunger
* Unexplained weight loss
* Feeling unusually tired or weak
* Blurry vision
These symptoms can have other causes, but if you or someone you know is experiencing several of them, talk to a doctor and ask about getting checked for diabetes. T1D can sometimes develop relatively quickly, so it’s important not to ignore concerning symptoms.
