Painful jazz for difficult times
Hello everyone.
I don't listen to a whole lot of jazz so I would like some recommendations from people who know their stuff.
I'm looking for painful jazz. It could sound painful or express pain. I don't want melancholy or consolation, though. I don't just mean sad, I mean *pain*. I want the same sort of feeling you get listening to Charley Patton in the middle of the night with your heart bleeding, wishing you were dead.
Something like Brotzmann's *Machine Gun* but more inward-looking, if you know what I mean. It can be slow and mournful keening or torn-to-shreds screaming. I'm not really looking for a sound *per se*, just the feeling (but more 'out there' sort of stuff would be lovely).
Sorry for the abstract concept, anything you like would be much appreciated. I kind of know the big names already, but not very well, so lesser-known stuff would be preferred.
