We had a power surge this morning and my wife didn't understand why I was annoyed about things reverting to "default" states (e.g. the air purifier, dyson fan, and humidity-sensing bathroom fan).
It got me thinking about my implicit requirements for devices, so I thought I'd write it down and crowdsource it.
# The Obvious:
* Local, no cloud! Local Push even better * Intuitive dumb interface for family and guests * Wired instead of battery, with easy option to hardwire w/out taking it apart / soldering * Works without WAN, dumb interface works without LAN * Well-documented API, ideally OSS * Rock solid connection reliability and latency (<500ms round trip preferred, <1s max)
# Extended List:
* Persistence of state - goes back to how it was after power interruption / network disconnect * Idempotent controls - commands have the same outcome regardless of previous state * Discrete simple physical design, ideally paintable * Bonus points if I never have to download an app * Configurable transition speeds (e.g. light dimmers. looking at caseta lutron dimmers as a failure here.) * Configurable status indication LEDs on dumb control surfaces
