TW I’m sharing this blast from the past bc it makes me feel super proud and reminds me of how far I’ve come. A lot of photos from this time period did not have just me, so I’ve started to take more photos of just myself. When this photo was taken, I was still stuck in an on again off again relationship that continued for six years. I was tied to someone who would scream at me for hours or break up with me when I had important tests, job interviews, or even my grad school interview last year. Someone who shamed me for my appearance and made me feel like I was his maid. I ended it in 2022, for good, I thought. But he kept pleading with me or would hurt himself or threaten to kill himself, so I stayed in his orbit and tried to help him because I felt like it was all on me. But nothing changed, not even how he would give non apologies after the fact by saying he would do better next time. At some points, people called us ‘the perfect couple,’ not knowing that he never valued my boundaries and would gaslight me into thinking he was in danger or that he didn’t do things to me that he definitely did. He did so many traumatizing and hurtful things that it’s hard to understand now why I stayed. I’m proud that I was finally able to say no and put my foot down about a year ago after two consecutive nights of screaming at me before my grad school interviews, and he slunked off when I told him I wasn’t going to take it anymore. It’s hard to leave, but you find good people around you when you do. I’m so incredibly happy with how 2025 turned out, and I’m excited to see what great people, opportunity, and magic 2026 brings. If you ever feel this way or are worried that you may be stuck in a similar situation, know that you have worth and you can always reach out to me, because I’ll understand at least some parts of your story. This past year, I’ve seen a lot of friendships pop back up after years of silence because I started feeding good relationships. If you’re stuck in this situation, you can too. Depression doesn’t cause people to be cruel, inadequacy and weakness does. But also this is just a reminder to take more photos of just you. Otherwise you’ll need someone to help you photoshop your photos lol. #inspiration source
